An interview for Mother's Day with Johanna Jaroschek, mother of three from Gräfelfing near Munich
Mother's Day 2025 is just around the corner – a good opportunity to take a look behind the scenes and find out how working mothers balance family, career and sleep?
We spoke with Johanna – a mother of three from Gräfelfing near Munich – who gave us honest and personal insights into her everyday family life.
"The shining eyes of my children are priceless."
Mother's Day, family and small rituals
Dailydream:
Are you already looking forward to Mother's Day 2025? Do you have any particular family rituals?
Johanna:
Oh yes, I'm so happy! The little handmade gifts from my children are especially lovely – their pride and shining eyes are simply priceless.
A large, leisurely breakfast is an absolute must for us. Completely stress-free, simply enjoying it together.
Dailydream:
What do you find most wonderful about being a mother – and what do you consider the biggest challenge?
Johanna:
The best things are the carefree moments with my children – when we laugh, play, or simply forget about everyday life.
The biggest challenge is to always be there for everyone while not losing sight of yourself.
"Sleep changes – but routines and rituals help"
Changes in sleep and new routines
Dailydream:
How has your sleep pattern changed since the birth of your children?
Johanna:
Having children naturally changes your sleep patterns: especially in the first few years, you wake up more often – that's just part of it.
Today our two older children (7 and 5 years old) sleep soundly through the night, and even our youngest (2 years old) rarely needs our closeness at night. This makes the nights more restful again.
Dailydream:
What is your biggest challenge right now when it comes to sleep?
Johanna:
Go to bed early enough! Once the children are asleep, I often treat myself to some "me time," and then it quickly gets late. Especially on office days, I realize how precious every hour of sleep is.
Dailydream:
What evening rituals help you to relax?
Johanna:
Our evenings follow a fixed routine: We read a book together, I sing a lullaby and gently massage her back.
Sometimes I draw little pictures on their backs that they get to guess – that's their favorite moment. Also, the door stays open and a light is left on in the hallway – these little rituals provide a lot of comfort.
"Good sleep is the basis for being there for others."
Why sleep is essential for families
Dailydream:
How important is restful sleep to you – physically and mentally?
Johanna:
Very important! After a good night's sleep, I can really feel my energy, serenity, and joy returning.Without enough sleep, I get stressed and unfocused more quickly – and the children notice this too.
Dailydream:
Was there a particular "aha" moment regarding sleep and self-care?
Johanna:
Yes, absolutely: when I was able to sleep through the night again after weaning and my husband took over the nighttime wake-ups. Those nights were like little sources of strength – they gave me lasting resilience.
Dailydream:
What tips do you have for a relaxed sleep for children?
Johanna:
Offer closeness without overwhelming them. In the evening, I explain to my children that I am nearby. This reassurance helps them fall asleep peacefully.
"Structuring in everyday life gives us freedom."
Organization and small everyday helpers
Dailydream:
How do you organize your family life as a working mother?
Johanna:
A weekly meal plan saves an incredible amount of time.
In addition, we have small everyday helpers like a robot vacuum cleaner or a Thermomix that make many things easier. Our children take on small tasks like laying out their clothes for the next day – this brings structure and makes everyday life more relaxed.
Dailydream:
What advice would you give to new mothers regarding sleep and recovery?
Johanna:
Teamwork is everything! Taking turns getting up at night makes a huge difference. Established evening routines create predictability and security for everyone. Even if it means some inconvenience at first, in the long run, consistent rhythms bring much-needed peace to everyday life.
